Editorial Review:

Product Description:
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky discusses theories and concepts applicable to nearly every variation of the game, including five-card draw (high), seven-card stud, hold ’em, lowball draw, and razz (seven-card lowball stud). This book introduces you to the Fundamental Theorem of Poker, its implications, and how it should affect your play. Other chapters discuss the value of deception, bluffing, raising, the slow-play, the value of position, psychology, heads-up play, game theory, implied odds, the free card, and semibluffing.

Many of today’s top poker players will tell you that this is the book that really made a difference in their play. That is, these are the ideas that separate the experts from the typical players. Those who read and study this book will literally leave behind those who don’t, and most serious players wear the covers off their copies. This is the best book ever written on poker.

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Informative - a must-read for good players.
A very well laid out book with numerous examples supporting the concepts detailed. This is a book many beginners could understand and receive value from but it does assume a working knowledge of the game. Many of the strategies presented, though powerful tools to an expert, might prove disastrous to a rank beginner. That said, a knowledge of the play one is likely to face at the tables is invaluable even if you are not yet adept enough to effectively use all of the tools yourself. My only complaint is one common to almost all books of this type - no red ink for the suits! I'm sure it is a cost thing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Teach a man to fish...
Me and some buddies play a ten dollar house game every week or so and up to this point I've always been a break even player, or maybe even a little worse. I recently bought and read Harrington's books on cash games, and they were for the most part pretty decent. They definitely helped my game and gave me some good things to think about. Ultimately though, I was never really taught how to think about poker. There were several rules to follow as well as theory but I finished the books thirsty for better knowledge on how to think at the poker table. The Theory of Poker was definitely that book. Sklansky teaches you how to think like a professional poker player, just as the title suggests. Now when I play poker I feel more confident in my decisions, and better understand why I'm making the plays I'm making. Overall, this is a highly recommended book for anyone wanting to know more than just the basics of the game, and ultimately how to teach yourself to play poker and better your game. I should also note that I am glad I bought Harrington's books, they are a good introduction to the game and while reading Sklansky's book I'm able to see all the reasonings behind Harrington's recommendations and clarify and expand upon anything I was unsure of in the first place.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Insight on How the Pros Play
Gave me a good understanding about how the pros play and some ideas for my own play. Some concepts take a while to grasp. Good information on evaluating my hand against opponents hands and determining my next move.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - On of the best books every written
This is not an easy to read book. This is pure theory on poker in general and is not focused on a specific type of poker. It has general concepts that apply to all form of poker. Is a must read for anyone who wants to become a serious poker players.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The theory of poker
This is the book for those who want to play a profitable poker. With all its tips and concepts it's almost impossible don't love this book. Take it with everywhere you go.

Quick Fact: Shopping Inexpensively
Look for and use coupons. These can be found in the Sunday paper, in magazines, sometimes in the telephone book. A coupon is a little slip of paper allowing you to get a small discount when you buy the specific item described. The coupon will say "Save 40 cents on any Pledge", for example. That means that if you present the coupon at the time of purchase, and if you bought the correct brand and size, and if the expiration date has not passed, you will pay 40 cents less for that can of Pledge furniture polish. If the store is having a "double coupon day", the coupon is worth twice as much, (you would pay 80 cents less for a can of Pledge).

Purchases can be made very inexpensively at garage sales and second hand stores. Used items in good condition often can be found for a low price. Also check newspapers and local bulletin boards for listings of used goods for sale.
