 Rating:  - Deceptive titleFirst off this book for limit poker only, a fact which isn't clear on reading the cover. I'm a no-limit and tournament player, so normally I wouldn't have picked this up, but it was a gift. I did learn a few things, most obviously is that limit and no-limit (including tourney's) are completely different games. I mean by that, not that the rules are different, just the the betting strategy is very different and playing a certain style in the wrong game will get you crushed, so be sure you understand what type of game you are playing. I say that to beginners, obviously experienced players don't need to be told this and probably aren't going to get much out of this book, it's definitely a beginner book. So, if you are a beginner to Texas Hold'em and would like to play limit poker, which isn't a bad start, I would give a recommendation to read this, with a couple of caveats; some of the advice can go either way and some of the math is faulty. Also, the relative strength of hands chart can be misleading. As for the problems in the book, I found a few places I might argue a different play and I didn't like the difference between how the author here showed a hand played out and how Harrington does it, but it's a minor complaint. For the most part, I answered the problem the way the author advises, so I'd say we'd pick the same play most of the time. I disagreed where he says he will call under the gun AA to induce callers, but later in the book he recommends raising AA in middle position to narrow the field, it seemed like contradictory advice, but I understand is explanation, in any case. Keep in mind this kind of play will get you destroyed in no-limit games, so be mindful of what type of game you are headed towards as you read this book. On a final note, I'm not sure, in the last hand, where the author came up with 2000 to 1 odds on getting runner runner 9's with one nine in his hole cards. It's not any where near that high, and it made we question all the other math used in the book. In case, maybe it was just an oversight, but it certainly reminds me to verify everything, even when it comes from experts. So, finally, for someone interested in limit poker, and in the beginner stages of play, I'd recommend this book, if you are advanced in limit games, you'll not get anything here, if you're only into no-limit or tourney's, this is also a pass, however, if you might find yourself in a limit game, and like myself you're used to playing no-limit, this book is definitely worth reading because it does a good job of showing the differences between the games. Rating: - A Great Introduction Into Texas Hold 'EmA friend of mine had me over to play texas hold 'em, which was my first time ever actually playing the game. I decided I needed to 'really' learn how to play the game. I read that Harrington's books were the best, but being a beginner, I could tell that that book might be too complicated for me, so I got the Illustrated Guide instead. I think it's a great book if you're only interested in learning the rules of the game, and how certain hands are played. I thought this book was an easy read, and the illustrations made it easer to read. I would read this book first, before trying to read one of the more advanced popular books out there. Rating:  - Very basic, and covers only LIMIT hold 'emThe illustrated concept is a good one, and makes the book a lot easier to read and use than most text-only books. However, there are two very important facts to know about this book. First, it covers ONLY limit hold 'em. This is not evident from the title of the book, and if this is intentional, it's rather shameful. Second, the content is extremely basic. The sub-title of the book: "Making Winners out of Beginners and Advanced Players" is completely untrue. I am an Intermediate player and I didn't find one single new idea, concept or thought in this book. Everything in here is of the most elemental nature. Having said all that, if you've never played Hold 'Em before and are looking for a nice picture book to help you get started, then this is it. Keep in mind, though, that the negative side to the illustrated format is that there is little organization to the book and even slight variances to each of the 150 situations discussed are not shown. Rating: - Decent book, but very basicthis is a book about limit poker for a beginner. Not for the advanced player as the front of the book reads. But if you are a beginner, it seems like it should do a decent job at teaching. I was disappointed, but I've been playing foraa couple of years. Rating:  - great book for my boyfriendI bought this book for my boyfriend in Jan. He had been getting in to playing poker and wanted to learn more about Texas Hold Em. I checked out other books on Amazon, but decided to go w/ this one. Good thing I did because he LOVED it.
